The General Business English Course
The EF English First Business English course is ideal for
students needing English in their work. The curriculum includes
work on improving general language skills as well as focusing
on the specific language needed in such cases as business
letters, presentations, negotiations, telephoning, and informal
social contacts. General business courses can be offered in
English First Schools or in the workplace.
Business courses generally use one of the textbooks specified
by your local support office in combination with specialist
supplementary materials depending on the business needs of
the group.
These courses are meant for learners with knowledge of English
above beginner level who have taken the standard adult placement
test. Your school may offer business courses for very low
levels if market forces demand but in general the benefit
to students is questionable.
It is important to note and to make sure that students are
aware that Business English courses concentrate on language
skills required in business situations, but rarely teach business
itself. Teachers cannot be expected to be experts in various
business areas as well as applied linguistics.
In order to run successful business courses; it is essential
that your school invest in the list of supplementary materials
recommended by your local office. In order to obtain the list;
please consult the Intranet and/or your regional office.
